How to Spray Water Based Topcoat

Watch this tutorial on how to properly use a HVLP sprayer to apply your General Finishes topcoat on your wood projects.

PRODUCTS FEATURED:
GENERAL FINISHES HIGH PERFORMANCE TOPCOAT: Satin

SPRAY GUNS:

In the shop, we use the 3M model HG18. It comes with a medium sized fluid tip and has a disposable air cap that you can use several times before replacing.

For this video, we sprayed High Performance Topcoat using a self-contained system, the Earl X Model 5500. It also comes with a medium sized fluid tip.

APPLICATION:

Although High Performance can be sprayed straight from the can, the best practice is to strain through a fine mesh filter before spraying.

Practice on a piece of cardboard to become familiar with the gun and how it sprays. Every gun sprays differently.

Fluid Control = determines how much material comes out.

Tip Sizes = Changes the size of the spraying pattern.

Always use a respirator when spraying. No one should breath in the fumes.

Start at a 90-degree angle and spray about 6-8 inches of fan pattern.

If any runs or drips occur, take a foam brush and lightly brush it out.

It will take about 1-2 hours for the finish to dry.

TIP:

Water-based finishes dry faster in hot and dry climates. Add 10-20% General Finishes Extender to slow the dry time.
